The International Congress of the Faculdades EST is taking place for the first time. It brings together 14 thematic symposiums proposed by the Research Groups active in the institution as well as the Research Fair. Many of these have been promoting symposiums for many years, which is reflected in the prestige which the event is gaining. For example, the 11th Research Fair of the Faculdades EST will be carried out under the umbrella of the Congress. The Congress, therefore, is a novelty with tradition. It gathers and weaves together the trajectories already well established and places them in evidence in a unified event which represents the rich diversity of the research developed here.
The theme chosen by the Research Groups themselves, “Religion and Society: contemporary challenges”, is sufficiently broad to permit space for this diversity. At the same time, it gives a direction. It points out the need to not only do a historical exegesis of what at other times was thought out to be shared among the specialists, but to seek formulations and foment actions of transformation of the society. The goal is a more just and free society with more active citizenship and, at the same time, more committed to the well being of all, including the environment. Religion, the religions have much to offer for the good of the society with which they constantly interact. Having said this, it is necessary to confront the ambiguities and imperfections of the religions with a critical and self critical attitude. The impassioned study within the context of the Congress joins with the objective analysis and the argument that is being tested by the interdisciplinary contributions.
The Congress is international in nature. It will include groups of visitors from South Africa, from Germany, from India, from various countries of Latin America, among other nations and continents. Around 500 participants will be walking around the beautiful campus on the Morro do Espelho, in São Leopoldo/RS and its surroundings. Lectures of renowned researchers, round table discussions, communications, panels, cultural presentations, among other activities will be offered. There will be broad opportunity, supported by an infrastructure mounted specifically for the Congress, of gathering, discussion, planning, fomenting creativity and innovation with quality and depth.
